Bus terminal built at a cost ₹4 crore to reduce congestion not being utilised

Mangaladevi Bus Terminal remains unused despite two inaugurations, prompting officials to address the issue for city buses.
Twice inaugurated in February, the Mangaladevi Bus Terminal constructed under the Mangaluru Smart City project, has not been put to use for over a month with none of the city buses utilising it.
The terminal, built at a cost of around ₹4 crore along with a primary health centre facility near Mangaladevi Circle, was supposed to reduce traffic congestion around Mangaladevi Temple, about 500 m away from the circle. City buses plying from Mangaladevi to different parts of the city, including State Bank, Surathkal, Kunjathabail, Kavoor, Moodushedde, etc., continue to remain parked for a while near the temple and do not enter the newly built terminal.
The terminal was first inaugurated on February 9 in the presence of MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MLA D. Vedavyasa Kamath, Mayor Manoj Kumar, Deputy Mayor P.S. Bhanumathi and others. Taking objection to violation of protocol for not having invited the district in charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, another ‘official’ inauguration of the terminal and other facilities was done on February 17.
Former Mayor and outgoing Mangaladevi ward councillor Premananda Shetty told The Hindu that Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Ravichandra Naik has written to the Mangaluru Senior Regional Transport Officer and Deputy Commissioner for Transport (DCT) recently on the subject.
The commissioner said that MSCL has constructed a well-equipped bus terminal along with bus bay shelter, footpath etc., in Mangaladevi Ward. He urged the RTO to take suitable steps for making use of the facility as well as reducing congestion around the temple.
DCT Shridhar Mallad said he has convened a meeting of bus operators on April 8 and a decision would be taken on the issue. If needed, permits would be amended to allow city buses to utilise the terminal.
DK Bus Owners Association Aziz Parthipady said the operators would follow directions from the transport department in this regard.
