City Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar on Sunday flagged off a bicycle rally organised by Land Trades Builders and Developers to raise awareness about the benefits of cycling and to mark the World Health Day.
Titled PRORide Cyclothon (Edition 1), the rally was organised in association with two cycling clubs of the city — Mangalore Cycling Club (MACC) and We Are Cycling (WERC) — to encourage people to take up cycling not only for fitness, but also for daily commuting.
Mr. Kumar said, “Nowadays people are health conscious. Cycling is a very good exercise, the best way to keep oneself healthy and fit and it is good for environment. I am also a cycling enthusiast. Everybody should take up cycling and ride every day for at least 10 to 15 km. People should commute by cycle to college, schools or office and become the ambassadors of the green revolution.”
Before flagging off the rally at Land Trades’ Milestone 25, Balmatta, Mr. Kumar felicitated veteran rider Joseph Periera, who was recently qualified for Race Across America event. The Commissioner said cycling activity was one that could keep the body as well as the mind fit. Land Trades chairman Shrinath Hebbar was present.
About 50 riders rode along the trunk routes of the city via Hampanakatte, Mangaladevi, Jeppu and Kankanady, before winding up the cyclothon at the starting point.
