YSRCP leader questioned for second day in Raghu Ramakrishna Raju torture case

Prakasam SP interrogates YSRCP leader accused of torturing former MP, ongoing investigation with possible court appearance.

Prakasam district Superintendent of Police A.R. Damodar and his team on Tuesday (January 28) continued the interrogation of Kamepalli Tulasi Babu, a YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader from Gudivada, who is the main accused in Deputy Speaker Kanumuru Raghu Ramakrishna Raju’s custodial torture case. In the presence of his advocates, the questioning went on till late in the evening.
Tulasi Babu was charged with an attempt to murder Mr. Raghu Ramakrishna Raju, an MP at that time, while the latter was in the AP-CID custody on May 14, 2021, during the previous YSRCP regime. After the TDP-JSP-BJP combine formed the government in the State in 2024, the former MP lodged a complaint with the Guntur SP, alleging that he had been tortured in a false case as part of a criminal conspiracy by the YSRCP.
The Prakasam police sent notices to Tulasi Babu for an inquiry on January 8, 2025. On that day, Tulasi Babu came to the SP office with his followers in 35 cars. However, the police did not allow others except the main accused. Heated arguments took place between the police personnel and his followers. Finally, he was arrested on the same day and produced in the Guntur court.
In an identification parade conducted by the police in the presence of the Guntur District Judge recently, Mr. Raghu Ramakrishna Raju identified Tulasi Babu among five suspects.
On Monday, the Prakasam police took custody of Tulasi Babu from the Guntur District Prison for three days.
According to sources, he was initially sent to Government General Hospital for medical tests and kept there till 5.30 p.m. He was brought to the Ongole Taluka Police Station by 7 p.m. and later sent to the SP office. The inquiry began by 8.30 p.m. and lasted for more than one and a half hours.
Built in 1927 during the British era, this marketplace has been a hub of activity for decades, offering everything from fresh produce and flowers to meat, dry fruits and exotic spices. However, years of neglect, accidents and infrastructure wear and tear have taken a toll on this heritage structure. During the 2012 fire incident at the market, more than 170 out of 440 shops, and the general infrastructure of the market was destroyed. The shops were given a basic makeover then. Since then, only the exterior of the market has been renovated, leaving the interiors and the roof untouched for more than a decade.
