District Collector T.S. Chetan honours Telugu poet Yogi Vemana, highlighting his timeless poetry and social impact.
Sri Sathya Sai District Collector T.S. Chetan paid floral tributes to Yogi Vemana, the renowned Telugu poet and social reformer, during a ceremony commemorating his birth anniversary. The event, organised by the District Tourism Department, was held in the mini-conference hall of the Collectorate here on Sunday morning.
Mr. Chetan described Yogi Vemana as a courageous reformer who challenged social customs that resulted in human suffering. He stated, “Yogi Vemana’s poetry not only reflects the moral and social consciousness of his time but continues to inspire future generations. His timeless verses, composed in the 17th century, remain significant and resonate profoundly with the Telugu community today.”
The Collector observed that Yogi Vemana’s writings, characterised by their profound moral insights and social commentary, were composed in simple language, making them accessible to the general public. He referenced Vemana’s well-known line, “Viswadabhirama Vinuravema,” which holds a special place among Telugu speakers.
He provided the participants with insights into Yogi Vemana’s influence on Telugu culture, noting that he was born in Kondaveedu, Guntur district, and that his Jiva Samadhi (final resting place) is situated in Katarupalli, within the Kadiri constituency of Sri Sathya Sai district. The tradition of lighting the Akhanda Jyoti at his Samadhi symbolised the enduring respect for his legacy, he added.
The Collector called upon all the participants to work collaboratively in imparting the lessons of Yogi Vemana’s poetry to younger generations, emphasising their relevance in addressing contemporary social challenges.
Joint Collector Abhishek Kumar, District Revenue Officer Vijaya Saradhi and officials from the Tourism Department were present.
