MP Yaduveer urges Union Minister to allow unlicensed tobacco farmers to sell produce, waive penalties, positive response received.
MP for Mysuru Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar has urged Union Minister for Commerce Piyush Goyal to allow unlicensed tobacco farmers to sell their produce and waive the penalty imposed on them.
Mr. Yaduveer met the Union Minister in New Delhi recently and submitted a formal appeal to him in this regard on behalf of the tobacco farmers, a statement noted.
He said the Union Minister had responded positively to the request and assured him that steps would be taken to facilitate the sale of tobacco cultivated by unlicensed tobacco growers. Mr. Goyal also assured him that the Tobacco Board would be directed to consider waiver of the penalties imposed on such farmers.
While reaffirming his commitment to the welfare of the farmers of his constituency, Mr. Yaduveer expressed hope that a decision concerning his request will be announced by the Centre soon.
Since tobacco is a controlled crop, the Tobacco Board has permitted a crop size of 100 million kg in the State for the year 2024-25 and fixed the quota for each barn owner.
If the licensed tobacco growers and unlicensed farmers cultivate more than the permitted quota, it is deemed unauthorized tobacco. The Tobacco Board is empowered to levy a penalty on the cultivation of unauthorized tobacco. However, the Centre has, on earlier occasions, waived the penalty for excess and unauthorized tobacco.
Even during the year 2023-24 crop season, the Centre accorded permission to the tobacco farmers to sell the unauthorized tobacco after waiving the penalties.
