Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has said that he would meet the Union Jal Shakti Minister on February 25 to discuss issues pertaining to all irrigation projects in the State.
“The Union Jal Shakti Minister has given us time on February 25. I will discuss Mekedatu, Mahadayi and Upper Krishna project proposals and also seek the release of announced funds for various irrigation projects,” he said, speaking to the reporters on the sidelines of the All-India State Water Ministers’ Conference 2025.
“This conference is highlighting best practices in water resource management from various states. The key objective of this conference is conservation and recycling of water. The State’s problems must be resolved without being looked at through a political lens. The Centre must also resolve stalemates between riparian states,” he noted.
Mr. Shivakumar said he had held discussions with the Irrigation Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regarding utilising 30 TMC of water from Tungabhadra river, and he would hold another round of discussions with them at Vijayawada soon. “All three riparian states must work out an amicable action plan for this project,” he said.
It is imperative that the Union Jal Shakti Ministry prepare clear guidelines and a blueprint for water usage in the country. Irrigation projects also need more grants, he said.
