Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Ravi Cheemalapati said on Wednesday (February 19, 2025) that they would form an opinion on the establishment of a High Court Bench in Kurnool by taking all relevant factors into consideration, and after duly looking into the grounds on which such Benches were set up in other States, and their functioning.
Hearing a PIL filed by advocate Thandava Yogesh against the State government’s decision to set up the HC Bench in Kurnool, the Judges said they would form their own opinion on the necessity to establish the Bench, and therefore he could withdraw the PIL.
Mr. Yogesh told the court that the Andhra Pradesh Government Secretary (Legal & Legislative Affairs & Justice) wrote a letter to the HC Registrar General regarding the proposed Bench and it amounted to interference with the judicial system.
He pointed out that the State government has already resolved to constitute a Bench in Kurnool, therefore, the High Court should act. Taking note of this, the High Court would exercise its discretion and posted the PIL for further hearing on June 25, 2025.
