Vital organs from brain dead teenager help six people

Vital organs harvested from a teenager who was brain dead following a road accident in Udupi district last weekend have helped to save the lives of six people.
According to Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, Avinash Shetty, two kidneys, two corneas, liver and skin were harvested from 19-year-old Srinivas, a resident of Saligrama.
He was admitted with severe injuries to the hospital after he met with an accident at Uppinakote in Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, at 4.45 p.m. on Saturday last.
Srinivas was officially declared brain dead twice by a panel of expert doctors. The first was at 3.15 p.m. on Monday and the second at 7.50 a.m. on Tuesday under the Protocols and Procedures of the Human Rights Act 1994. Subsequently, the victim’s father, Raju Nairy, expressed the willingness of the family to donate vital organs to save the lives of needy patients.
As per Jeevasarthakathe protocols and decisions, two corneas, two kidneys and skin were retained by the hospital to be given to registered patients, while the liver was sent to Aster Hospital, Bengaluru.
“Organ donation is a noble cause and my son has committed a great deed even in his death,” a press release quoted Mr. Nairy as saying.
Dr. Shetty thanked the family members of Srinivas for deciding to donate the organs to save the lives of needy patients.
