Moderate liquor sales during Sankranti in Visakhapatnam district, with average daily sales of ₹7 crore from January 12-15.
Liquor sales were moderate during Sankranti in the Visakhapatnam district. Shops and outlets on the outskirts of the city or rural areas had done better than those in the core city area.
As per the Prohibition & Excise Department officials, an average sale of ₹7 crore was registered each day from January 12 (Sunday) to 15 (Wednesday) in the district.
The district has 145 retail liquor outlets, apart from 131 outlets, which include 114 bars, 12 star hotels and five clubs. On Sunday, the outlets have made ₹7 crore business and the trend followed on the day of Bhogi, Sankranti as well as Kanuma. On an average, the district records around ₹5 crore in general days and the festival saw slight increase in sales, according to the officials.
Shops located in Bheemunipatnam, Pendurthi and Gajuwaka saw better sales than the shops under Seethammadhara, Gopalapatnam and Maharanipeta limits. “Probably most of the people leaving for their native places may be the reason for the moderate liquor sale,” said District Excise & Prohibition Officer R. Prasad. He said that the district saw ₹11 crore sales on December 31st.
As of now, the Excise Department is depending on manual mode of collecting information regarding the sales. The authorities are mulling to take the e-route soon.
