Vengaivayal case: Villagers stage sit-in protest as police restrict movement

The residents of Vengaivayal in Pudukkottai district staged a sit-in protest at the village on Saturday (January 25, 2025) after the police prevented them from taking part in a demonstration organised by the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) in Pudukkottai town.
The protest was organised to condemn the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CBCID) over its recent status report in the Vengaivayal human faeces case, which alleged that the persons accused of dumping excreta in the overhead drinking water tank of the Scheduled Caste (SC) village in 2022 were members of the same community.
Tight security measures were imposed, with no media personnel or outsiders allowed into the village comprising only SC residents. The police permitted only essential movement of residents of Eraiyur, a locality nearby. Further, a riot control vehicle, Vajra, was stationed at a checkpoint near Vellanur police station.
Speaking to The Hindu over the phone, K.R. Murugan, a resident of Vengaivayal, said: “We have gathered on our streets to protest. We are being denied our basic right to move out of the village. We are victims in this case but are being framed by the CB-CID. We demand permission to join the protests outside.”
As against the usual team of police personnel deployed for security every day, more than 150 police personnel, under the supervision of Pudukkottai DSP Abdul Rahuman, were stationed in the village on Saturday at seven key locations, including three major checkpoints surrounding Vengaivayal.
Amidst the tight security, two VCK functionaries, identified as Siruthai Siva and Rajendran, were arrested after they managed to enter the village. Meanwhile, another group of VCK members submitted a petition to the district administration at the district collectorate, demanding a fair investigation into the case.
The protest intensified near the district collectorate, where over 20 VCK members, including Pudukkottai West District Secretary Vellai Nenjan, were arrested during a demonstration.
