Radha Nagar vehicular subway construction update, expected completion by March 2025, facing delays due to worker shortage and land acquisition.
The vehicular subway, which has been constructed at Radha Nagar to enable residents of East Chromepet to access Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road avoiding the inconvenient level crossing 27, is expected to be completed by March 2025.
According to the State Highways department, the project estimated to cost ₹17.65 crore is about 80% complete. The remaining tasks, include completing the crash barrier which needs to be laid over for 15 metres, applying a wearing coat for 160 metres, constructing a collection well to store excess rainwater, building the top slab and establishing a pump room. Both sides of the road will also receive a bituminous layer.
“We have set the final extension of time as March 31, but there have been delays on the contractor’s side. We are also grappling with workers’ shortage,” an official from the State Highways department said.
According to I. Karunanithi, MLA of Pallavaram Constituency, he discussed the official correspondence with the Divisional Railway Manager of the Southern Railway regarding the Radha Nagar subway. “A two-directional traffic flow in this subway is essential and residents in Radha Nagar have also demanded the same. The Highways department requires additional railway land for a width of 3 metres and 30 metres in length for this purpose,” said Mr. Karunanithi. “The Divisional Railway Manager will inspect the site and is likely to approve it. We are planning to open the subway by March,” he said.
Senior social activist Santhanam V. expressed hope that the State Highways department would expedite the work, as Radha Nagar residents were frustrated with the long-pending construction. He further said that the acquisition of additional railway land has been causing significant delays, and the residents are awaiting the project’s completion without any postponement.
