“I have a three-year-old grand daughter. I am like your grandfather, feel free to express yourself before me,” Upalokayukta B. Veerappa told girl students of pre-metric and post-metric hostel for Scheduled Caste girls, near PVS Junction, in Mangaluru, during his interaction with students on Sunday.
“I have a three-year-old grand daughter. I am like your grandfather, feel free to express yourself before me,” Upalokayukta B. Veerappa told students of pre-metric and post-metric hostels for Scheduled Caste girls, near PVS Junction, in Mangaluru, on Sunday.
Before his interaction, the Upalokayukta had a look at the facilities at the two blocks in the hostel. He examined rice and other cereals used. He was impressed with the post-metric students forming a cabinet to involve students in maintaining hygiene, cleanliness, fitness, library and health in the hostel. Speaking about the hardships he faced during his school days, Mr. Veerappa asked students to keep minor problems aside and make good use of facilities to become noble citizens of the country.
Mr. Veerappa visited the hostel at about 9 a.m. Students staying on the second floor of the post-metric block complained that they were forced to study in the computer block as the study room was being used for the stay of two hostel women staff members. The Upalokyukta asked the hostel warden to make alternative arrangements for the staff so as to allow students to use reading room.
When students said they take turns every weekend maintaining the cleanliness of the two toilets, Mr. Veeerappa said it was good that students were involved in cleanliness activities. “But this should not be a routine work,” he said, and urged the students to concentrate on studies.
The Upalokayukta asked students of the pre-metric hostel block to shun corrupt practices and take the lead in forming a ‘corruption-free’ society.
He directed Deputy Suprintendent of Police (Lokayukta) Gana Kumar to visit government hostels regularly. The Upalokyukta said government hostels, hospitals and offices should prominently display phone numbers of Lokayukta officials for reporting on problems.
The Upalokayukta was accompanied, among others, by Lokayukta Deputy Registrars K.M Basavarajappa and N.M. Aravind and Additional Deputy Commissioner G. Santosh Kumar.
