Udupi Deputy Commissioner K. Vidyakumari on Tuesday instructed local bodies to reserve funds in their annual budgets for sterilising stray (street) dogs.
Speaking at a special meeting of Udupi Jilla Prani Daya Sangha in her office, Ms. Vidyakumari said that her office has been receiving many complaints of stray dog bites. Such cases are on the rise. Udupi City Municipality, town municipalities, town panchayats and gram panchayats should reserve enough funds in their budgets for the sterilisation.
The Deputy Commissioner asked the local bodies to conduct a census of street dogs once every three months. If this was not possible, then the number of street dogs should be estimated at 2% of the population under the jurisdiction of every local body.
If a person is injured in stray dog biting incident, local bodies should pay ₹5,000 as compensation to the injured. In case of death in such cases, ₹5 lakh compensation should be given.
The DC said that 3,454 stray dogs were sterilised in Udupi district during 2023-24. Of them 1,878 were female and 1,576 were male. In all, 1,462 dogs were sterilised in the district between April and December 2024. Of them, 981 were male and 481 were female.
