Unregulated movement of vehicles and roadside encroachments on Thillai Nagar Main Road in Tiruchi, causing frequent traffic snarls has raised safety concerns among road users.
With 11 cross roads and 27 intersections leading to many commercial establishments, banks, hospitals, and other outlets, the 1-km Thillai Nagar Main Road remains abuzz throughout the day with vehicles.
“The problem persists throughout the day, especially during morning and evening. Motorists have to cross the road cautiously as vehicles approach from all directions. Speeding vehicles from the crossroads pose a threat to the road users,” said G. Mithun, a road user.
Unauthorised parking of two-wheelers and four-wheelers along the Thillai Nagar Main Road continues to remain a major problem. On-road parking reduces the effective width of the road, forcing vehicles to slow down and leading to traffic congestion.
Although the stretch is wide enough, rampant encroachment has shrunk its carriageway, causing frequent traffic snarls. Roadside eateries, pushcarts and mobile shops occupy a major portion of the road. Encroachments on the pedestrian platforms add to the woes.
Despite the Tiruchi City Corporation instructing the vendors to relocate their pushcarts and mobile eateries to the cross streets of the main road, many continue to do business on the main road.
Similarly, the Thillai Nagar Main Road and Salai Road junction, and Thennur High Road and Thillai Nagar Main Road junction witness heavy traffic snarls. One-way violations are rampant on the stretch, with vehicles criss-crossing in all directions. “The authorities should come up with a solution to regulate traffic and check violations to ensure smooth flow of traffic on major roads,” said a motorist.
