TMC president G.K. Vasan calls for CBI probe in Anna University case, criticizes DMK government's handling of law and order.
TMC (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan on Sunday (January 5, 2024) said that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should investigate the Anna University sexual assault case.
Interacting with journalists in Erode on Sunday, he demanded swift action in the case and a “death penalty” for the accused. He further stressed the need to ensure justice and uphold law and order in the State.
Mr. Vasan alleged that there was no progress in the case even as 15 days had passed since the crime. “Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s silence on the issue has raised suspicions of political influence, undermining public trust in the DMK government’s ability to maintain law and order,” he added.
Mr. Vasan further said: “The rampant circulation of liquor and drugs under the DMK government is exacerbating the law and order, contributing to such heinous crimes...”
Even allies of the ruling party who have spoken about the case are being targeted, and this reveals administrative inefficiency, he added.
Mr. Vasan opposed the proposed merger of certain village panchayats with municipal Corporations, describing it as impractical and urged the State government to issue a government order to withdraw the plan.
Mr. Vasan highlighted the high number of cancer cases in Erode district and urged the Central and State governments to conduct a joint study and establish a specialised cancer treatment facility. The pipeline work by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited under its Irugur-Devangonthi Pipeline (IDPL) project, which cuts across farmlands from Coimbatore to Muthur, should be halted immediately as it is important to protect agricultural lands and farmers’ livelihoods.
