Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation nears completion of underground drainage project, extending connections to 7,000 households.
The Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation is about a week away from completing the underground drainage project.
The last phase of work on drilling a rocky underground portion in Zone IV is in progress for laying underground pipelines.
Once this task is completed, the local body will be in a position to extend drainage connections to about 7,000 additional households. Out of the 62,000 connections targeted under the ₹636-crore project, door-wise connections have already been provided to the rest of the households, S. Ramamoorthy, Corporation Commissioner, said.
The civic body had already carried out trials at the two Sewage Treatment Plants constructed under the scheme with capacities to treat 36 mld (million litres per day) and 30 mld respectively.
Prior to the launch of the project, 18,000 households had access to underground drainage lines laid by the New Tirupur Area Development Corporation (NTADCL). During 2005, the NTADCL had laid sewer collection system for a length of 120 km covering 22 wards, of which 11 wards were fully covered and the rest partially covered.
The underground drainage system that has been in operation since 2008 collects about seven to eight mld of sewage that is treated at the 15 mld STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) constructed by NTADCL at Sarkar Periyapalayam village.
The new STPs have the excess capacity to handle sewage that would be generated in the underground drainage schemes to be undertaken in future, Mr. Ramamoorthy said.
