Panchayat Raj Minister Seethakka questions National Award criteria, criticizes glorification of controversial characters in films.
Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Danasari Anasuya, populatrly known as Seethakka, has sparked a debate after she made strong remarks on the recent National Award conferred on the movie Pushpa-The Rise. Comparing it to the critically acclaimed Jai Bhim, she questioned the criteria for recognising films that portray socially relevant themes versus those that glorify controversial characters.
Speaking at an event in Mulugu on Monday, she said, “A film like Jai Bhim, which showcased rights and inspired the downtrodden sections, did not receive a National Award. There are no Central incentives for such meaningful films. Instead, a smuggler stripping a policeman naked was awarded. What message does this send?”
The Minister criticised the portrayal of a smuggler as a hero and a policeman as villain in Pushpa, adding that such narratives undermine the dignity of law enforcement officers. “How does a police officer, who legally curbs crime, become a zero,” she questioned.
Seethakka emphasised the need for cinema to uphold societal values and inspire future generations. “Films should have qualities that elevate society and protect the dignity of others. Society will progress only if we respect institutions established by the Constitution,” she said.
While clarifying that she is not against films or artistic freedom, the Minister stressed the importance of encouraging cinema that delivers positive messages. “Awards should go to films that inspire and take society forward, not those that glorify smuggling or undermine lawful authority,” she added.
Actor Allu Arjun won the award for Best Actor (male) for his titular role in Pushpa-The Rise (2021)at the 69th National Film Awards.
