Hyderabad to witness major boost in healthcare with new Osmania General Hospital featuring 2,000 beds and advanced facilities.
Hyderabad is set to witness a major boost in public healthcare infrastructure as Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will lay the foundation stone for the new Osmania General Hospital (OGH) on Friday, January 31.
The new hospital, to be constructed at Goshamahal, will feature a built-up area of 32 lakh square feet and will adhere to the norms set by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS). With a capacity of 2,000 beds, the facility aims to enhance medical services on an unprecedented scale.
According to an official release, the hospital will include 29 major and 12 minor operation theatres, along with advanced surgical infrastructure such as robotic surgery units and a dedicated transplant theatre. The design also incorporates modern utilities, including a high-tech laundry, a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), and a biomedical waste management system.
The expansion of medical education and training will be another key feature of the new hospital, with 30 departments, including eight new super-specialty disciplines. Additionally, the project will house a new academic block that will accommodate Nursing, Dental, and Physiotherapy colleges.
The Chief Minister, during a series of detailed reviews and planning sessions, ensured that the new hospital would meet present and future infrastructure demands. The facility will have dedicated provisions for an independent power substation, a fire station, and emergency response measures. Furthermore, the design includes well-planned reception areas, waiting halls, canteens, cafeterias, restrooms, and designated spaces for staff, patients, visitors, and guests, the release said.
To address logistical concerns, the hospital will feature a ground-plus-two-level parking facility. Surrounding roads, including those near the police stadium, are being redesigned to ease traffic congestion, incorporating No-Signal junctions with tactical underpasses. The release also highlighted that provisions for helipads will be made to facilitate helicopter-based emergency evacuations and organ transplant transfers.
Currently, Osmania General Hospital serves over 3,000 outpatients and 1,200 inpatients daily, with medical staff performing between 100 and 150 major surgeries and numerous minor procedures. However, over time, the hospital’s existing 7.5 lakh square feet of space has become inadequate to cater to Hyderabad’s growing population. The new facility aims to bridge this gap by meeting NMC norms, which mandate a minimum space of 30 lakh square feet for a hospital of this scale.
