Tamil Nadu climate smart dairy entrepreneurship programme launched at Kumaraguru Institutions

MoU signed to promote climate-smart dairy practices in Tamil Nadu, launching entrepreneurship programme and handbook for sustainable farming.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Tuesday by Kumaraguru Institutions with Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) to promote climate-smart practices in dairy and agriculture, addressing water management, cattle feed optimisation, and other challenges.
The event marked the launch of Tamil Nadu Climate Smart Dairy Entrepreneurship Programme, to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and promote sustainable environmental practices by empowering dairy farmers and entrepreneurs. One hundred rural entrepreneurs are expected to lead sustainable ventures, consolidating Tamil Nadu’s leadership in climate-smart dairy farming.
A Climate Smart Dairy Handbook, focusing on sustainable practices to improve productivity and support small-scale farmers, was released on the occasion by K.N. Selvakumar, Vice-Chancellor of TANUVAS. The handbook was meant to provide valuable insights into sustainable practices for the entrepreneurs to enhance productivity and reduce environmental impact.
Highlighting India’s leadership in global milk production accounting for 25% of global output with 7.8% annual growth, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised on ventures focussing on value-added products like ice cream and yogurt for which, he estimated 30-50% growth. The collaboration between TANUVAS and the Environmental Defense Fund for promoting sustainable dairy practices will pave way for an integrated approach to ensure economic growth and environmental sustainability in India’s dairy and livestock sectors, he said.
Sarangdhar Ramchandra Nirmal, Founder of Kisan Konnect, presented an overview of the dairy sector, detailing the challenges and opportunities.
