The Tamil Nadu School Education Department on Monday (February 24, 2025) sought a detailed report from a private CBSE school in Chennai regarding allegations of corporal punishment meted out to a Class III student by a teacher of the institution.
“The principal of the school has been called to the department, and further action regarding the teacher will be taken after an inquiry,” said a senior official from the department.
According to reports, the child was slapped and his shirt buttons were removed by his Hindi teacher for not reciting a poem. On a complaint from his parents, the school has suspended the teacher.
School authorities said it was a “regrettable incident” and further action on the teacher would be considered after an inquiry.
In April 2024, following a Madras High Court order to implement guidelines to eliminate corporal punishment, the School Education Department had stipulated that apart from creating a nurturing environment, a monitoring committee was to be set up to enforce the directions.
“The department has formulated several awareness programmes on the elimination of corporal punishment and they will be carried out once schools reopen for the upcoming academic year,” an official said.
