T.N. delegation calls on Nirmala Sitharaman, requests funds to implement Jal Jeevan Mission

Tamil Nadu Minister seeks funds from Union Finance Minister for Jal Jeevan Mission implementation, restructuring Commercial Taxes Department.
Tamil Nadu Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply K.N. Nehru on Monday met and requested Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi for funds due to the State for the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission.
Mr. Nehru led a delegation of MPs and officials to meet the Union Minister. Tamil Nadu’s Special Representative in Delhi A.K.S. Vijayan; MPs Kanimozhi, Tiruchu N. Siva, T.M. Selvaganapathy, Arun Nehru, D. Malaiyarasan, A. Mani, P. Ganapathy Rajkumar, and K. Eswarasamy, and senior officials accompanied the Minister.
Funds were due from the Union government for the Jal Jeevan Mission both for the last and current year, official sources said. The mission primarily aims to provide functional household tap connections to rural households for potable water. While the Centre provides 50% of the funds, the State government provides the rest for providing piped water connections. For other support activities, the Centre provides 60% of the funds and the State government 40%.
The mission is jointly implemented by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board and the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department in the State.
In another meeting, State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu called on Ms. Sitharaman in her office in Delhi. Senior officials of the Commercial Taxes Department accompanied him. An official release termed it a courtesy call.
According to official sources, the Tami Nadu government is planning to restructure the Commercial Taxes Department, given the impact of the rolling out of the Goods and Services Tax regime. It is planning to focus on tax evasion by involving experts in data analytics from IIT-Hyderabad, officials said.

The Karnataka government has drafted a comprehensive master plan for the integrated development of Kukke Subrahmanya temple, the State’s highest revenue-generating temple managed by the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department. The redevelopment initiative is estimated to cost around ₹254 crore and aims to enhance infrastructure and facilities for devotees.
