T.N. CM Stalin moves resolution in Assembly seeking withdrawal of draft UGC regulations

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday (January 9, 2025) moved a resolution in the State Legislative Assembly urging the Centre to immediately withdraw the Draft UGC Regulations 2025, which propose to grant powers to Chancellors or Visitors to constitute the three-member search-cum-selection committee to appoint Vice-Chancellors.

Stalin on Thursday (January 9, 2025) moved a resolution in the State Legislative Assembly urging the Centre to immediately withdraw the Draft UGC Regulations 2025, which propose to grant powers to Chancellors or Visitors to constitute the three-member search-cum-selection committee to appoint Vice-Chancellors.
The resolution, seeking the withdrawal of the Draft University Grants Commission (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment and Promotion of Teachers and Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulations, 2025, stated: “The draft regulations are not only against federalism, the basic principle of the Indian Constitution, but also Tamil Nadu’s higher education.”
The Chief Minister said the draft regulations would affect Tamil Nadu’s higher education, which was driven by social justice. “It will severely affect the future of the youth of Tamil Nadu,” he said and urged the Union government to withdraw the draft regulations.
The Assembly is debating the resolution.
