Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin endorses articles exposing UGC overreach on VC appointments, emphasizes state autonomy.
A day after he reiterated Tamil Nadu government’s strong opposition to draft UGC regulations, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday (January 21, 2025) endorsed two articles published in The Hindu to contend that they exposed UGC’s overreach on Vice-Chancellor appointments, undermining State autonomy.
In a social media post, Mr. Stalin shared both the articles and termed them “insightful” and further underlined both were must-read to understand this critical issue.
In the first article, former Secretary General of the Lok Sabha P.D.T. Achary argued that UGC’s draft regulation violated federalism by venturing beyond its constitutional mandate and making regulations inconsistent with its parent Act.
In the other article, retired IAS officer Ashok Vardhan Shetty discussed how UGC’s evolving regulations conflict with State laws, ignore judicial precedents affirming state powers, and highlight that UGC regulations for State universities are advisory, not mandatory.
