Members of various organisations staged a demonstration in Belagavi on Monday opposing a project to supply water from the Hidkal reservoir to Hubballi-Dharwad industrial estate.
The protesters first congregated at Kittur Chennamma Circle and then marched to the Deputy Commissioner’s office as part of the ‘Namma Neeru, Namma Hakku’ (our water, our right) campaign.
On reaching the Deputy Commissioner’s office, some of the protesters tried to lay siege to the Deputy Commissioner’s chamber, which as foiled by the police. The protesters then staged a dharna demanding that Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Roshan come to receive a memorandum.
Subsequently, the Deputy Commissioner met the protesters, who urged him to stop the ongoing work related to the project and submitted a memorandum in this regard. Mr. Roshan said that the issue would be raised at the government level for further advice on the matter.
