P.E.I.'s second-largest hospital is dealing with an outbreak of influenza in its medical-palliative unit.
Health P.E.I. said in a news release Wednesday that patients in that unit at Prince County Hospital in Summerside will be limited to one visitor at a time in an effort to control the spread of the flu.
Visitors will be asked to follow infection-control measures, including wearing a mask as they come into the facility, the health agency said. Anyone considering visiting patients is encouraged to stay away if they're feeling unwell.
A spokesperson for Health P.E.I. said there is currently only one palliative patient in the unit, and the hospital's staff is working to support the patient and their family.
Patients are typically at their most vulnerable when they enter palliative care, which is meant for people with terminal illnesses who are in the final days of their lives. Many have compromised immune systems that could make them more susceptible for illnesses like influenza that can spread rapidly.
Care teams can provide comfort and support to patients in long-term care, community care, a palliative-care facility and in hospital settings.
The Health P.E.I. spokesperson said staff typically do not manage outbreaks on palliative-care wards any differently than those in any other unit because "every facility can have a palliative situation."
