Signal failure at Chennai Beach station disrupts suburban train services, causing delays and inconvenience for hundreds of commuters.
Hundreds of commuters were put to hardship after a signal failure at the Chennai Beach railway station caused disruption in the operation of suburban train services on Friday evening. The two sections of the Tambaram-Beach and the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) from Beach to Velachery were affected by the signal failure.
The signal failure resulted in Chennai Beach-bound trains remaining non-operational on platforms 1 and 2 at the Tambaram railway station, throwing a wrench in the travel plans of many. T. Raghuraman, a regular commuter travelling from Chennai Beach to Tambaram, said train services were stopped for over an hour, with a few trains halted at railway stations such as Mambalam and Nungambakkam.
A senior official of Southern Railway said signal failure at the Chennai Beach station resulted in the suburban train traffic being affected for over an hour. However, the maintenance staff, as a temporary measure, provided a turn-back facility from the Chennai Park railway station due to which trains on the Beach-Tambaram section were operated at delayed intervals, he added.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), probing the death of contractor, Sachin Panchal, who allegedly ended his life in Bidar on December 26 last year, arrested five persons, including the prime accused Rajkumar Kapnoor, a former member of the Kalaburagi Mahanagara Palike, and reportedly a follower of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister, Priyank Kharge, on Friday.
