RCB suffers another defeat at home to Delhi Capitals, as Shafali Verma and Jess Jonassen shine in a dominant win.
After three straight defeats at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) was desperate to end the home leg on a high. It was not to be, as Smriti Mandhana’s side crashed to yet another loss on Saturday, this time to Delhi Capitals (DC).
RCB (4 points) tumbled to a nine-wicket loss to the table topper (10 points) - a blow to its knockout aspirations.
The home team had no answers to the might of Shafali Verma (80 n.o., 43b, 8x4, 4x6) and Jess Jonassen (61 n.o., 38b, 9x4, 1x6), who made light work of the 148-run target.
The duo put on a match-winning 146-run unbroken second-wicket partnership. As the batters began to grow in confidence, the packed house fell silent. A few clean hits later, the home faithful afforded gracious applause.
With a DC win around the corner, Kim Garth misjudged a regulation catch in the deep and conceded a six - aptly summing up RCB’s disastrous run.
After being asked to bat, RCB stumbled to a par score on the back of a fighting knock from Ellyse Perry (60 n.o., 47b, 3x4, 3x6). The Australian came in to bat early, as Smriti was dismissed cheaply for a fourth time.
Placing prime value on her wicket, Perry went about her business efficiently. She found good company in Danielle Wyatt (21, 18b, 2x4, 1x6) and Raghvi Bist (33, 32b, 2x6). Raghvi’s stumping in the 17th over stopped RCB from making a big score.
