
Regional Meteorological Centre gets woman head for the first time

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, which serves as the weather headquarters for the southern States, has got a woman head for the first time. She will take charge on Saturday.

B. Amudha, Scientist F at the RMC, will succeed S. Balachandran, Additional Director-General of Meteorology, who retired on Friday.
Ms. Amudha was Head, Regional Instruments Maintenance Centre and Training Division. Her areas of work include operational aviation weather forecasting and instrumentation and hydrology and research on Northeast monsoon and cyclonic storms. She has published several research papers in peer-reviewed journals.
She took over from Mr. Balachandran who served for more than 33 years in the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Mr. Balachandran spent over two decades in the RMC and served in various positions before becoming the Additional Director-General of Meteorology. He began his career in IMD, Pune, in 1992 and published several research papers, including on Northeast monsoon and trends in tropical cyclones.
