Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has written to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, urging his intervention in securing the release of 13 Tamil fishermen, including six from the Union Territory’s Karaikal region, who were taken into custody by the Sri Lankan Navy on Monday (January 27, 2025).
In his letter, Mr. Rangasamy, sharing the details of the detainees, called upon the Union Minister to take appropriate steps on a priority basis with the Sri Lankan government to secure the release of the fishermen.
Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) V. Vaithilingam also sought the assistance of the External Affairs Minister in securing the fishermen’s release. In a letter to Mr. Jaishankar on Tuesday (January 28, 2025), the MP said the fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Karaikal ventured into the sea on Sunday (January 26, 2025) and on the next day, they were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy.
“I kindly request the Union Minister to intervene into the issue and pursue the Sri Lankan government to release the captured fishermen along with their boat,” he said.
