GCC Commissioner announces increase in bio-mining capacity at Kodungaiyur dump yard to 10,000 tonnes per day by 2025.
Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran said on a post in X (formerly Twitter) that the processing capacity of the bio-mining project at Kodungaiyur dump yard would be increased to 10,000 tonnes per day from March 1, 2025.
He said the project had processed 3 lakh tonnes of legacy waste so far. Initial operational issues are expected to be resolved by the end of the month, he said. Last year, the GCC announced that it aims to reclaim 250 acres of land at this dump yard through biomining.
The Kodungaiyur dump yard spans 335 acres and contains 66.52 lakh tonnes of legacy waste. The ongoing bio-mining process, divided into six packages, is expected to be completed within two years at an estimated cost of ₹640.83 crore.
