Bharatiya Janata Party urges Railway Minister for new train routes benefiting business and tourism in Tenkasi district.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has appealed to Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw to introduce a Tenkasi – Bengaluru Express train via Rajapalayam and Sivakasi.
In a memorandum submitted to the Minister recently, Tenkasi district president of BJP Ananthan Ayyasamy said a train service between Tenkasi and Bengaluru via Rajapalayam, a hub for cotton mills and surgical cotton products, and Sivakasi, India’s largest firecracker, safety matches and printing industries hub, would immensely benefit the business community and the engineers working in the information technology industry of Tenkasi housing software firms like Zoho Corporation with a few thousand IT engineers.
Train Number 06029 / 30 Tirunelveli - Mettupalayam biweekly express should be rerouted via Tenkasi and Madurai as Siruvani Express. This train has been running as a special train for more than two-and-a-half years generating ₹8 lakh per trip and can utilise the existing lie-over rake of Train Number 22605/06 Purulia Express in Tirunelveli.
Train Number 06003 / 04, Tirunelveli - Tambaram weekly express should be rerouted via Tenkasi and Madurai as Tamirabharani Express to Chennai Central. This train had been operating as a special train for over five years generating ₹10 lakh per trip and can utilise the existing lie-over rake of Train No. 22629/30 Dadar Express in Tirunelveli
Train Number 11021/11022 Mumbai - Tirunelveli Chalukya Express should be extended up to Shencottai. The existing age-old coaches in this train should be replaced by LHB coaches to enhance passenger comfort and safety. This extension will provide Tenkasi direct connectivity with Mumbai, benefiting both business and tourism industries.
Train number 12651/12652 Tamil Nadu Sampark Kranti Express from New Delhi to Tirunelveli should be operated via Virudhunagar, Rajapalayam, Tenkasi, Pavoorchatram, and Ambasamudram. This would ensure Tenkasi’s first direct train to the national capital.
The proposed textile park in Virudhunagar, Tenkasi district’s famous tourist destination Courtallam, and nearby Sabarimala of Swami Ayyappan would ensure excellent patronage for these trains throughout the year. Hence, the Minister should take steps for introducing the new trains and ensuring re-routing and extension of the existing trains, Mr. Ayyasamy said in the memorandum.

The Tamil Nadu government has amended its prayer in a writ petition filed before the Madras High Court against the search and seizure operation carried out by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) at the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) headquarters in Chennai between March 6 and March 8, 2025.
