Margaret Chase Smith made history as the first woman elected to serve in both houses of Congress when she was elected to the Senate on this day in history, Sept. 13, 1948.
Following her graduation from Skowhegan High School, Smith worked a series of jobs before marrying Clyde H. Smith in 1930. She was known for her willingness to vote across party lines.
