The Texas Rangers, a legendary law enforcement agency, was formally proposed after more than a decade of "ranging" across the frontier to protect settlers, on Oct. 17, 1835.

The organization is known officially today as the Texas Ranger Division of the state Department of Public Safety. It derives its name from its original mission of "ranging" across the frontier to protect settlers.
