On this day in history, Sgt. William Carney received the Congressional Medal of Honor — the first African American so honored — for his protection of the American flag during the Civil War.
"Boys, I only did my duty; the old flag never touched the ground." "He knelt down to gather himself for action, still firmly holding the flag while bullets and shell fragments peppered the sand around him." After the Civil War, Sgt. Carney worked as one of the earliest U.S. letter carriers and frequently spoke in public about how he saved the U.S. flag. Erica Lamberg is a contributing writer for Fox News Digital.
Established by a joint resolution of Congress in July 1862, the award is bestowed upon "a person, who, while a member of the armed services, distinguishes themselves conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of their life above and beyond the call of duty, while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States."
