Stakeholders discuss management plan for Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary's Eco-Sensitive Zone to protect mangroves and local communities.
CORINGA
Collector S. Shan Mohan and other stakeholders of the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, including the sanctuary authorities, discussed the preparation of the management plan for the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) on Wednesday, February 19.
T.R. Vinod, Programme Director of Centre for Environment and Development (CED), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, and K. Jayachandra, CED-Hyderabad Regional Director were also present.
Mr. Shan Mohan said, “Natural farming and rainwater harvesting can be done in the ESZ without disturbing the wildlife.”
He has also directed the other stakeholders to suggest ideas to be included in the management plan.
The CED-Kerala has been entrusted with preparing the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) management plan for Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary. This plan will improve the management of the mangroves and avoid adverse impacts on the local communities that depend on the ecosystem in the Godavari estuary.
It may be noted that in 2021, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change declared 177.30 sq.km surrounding the sanctuary an ‘Eco-Sensitive Zone’, which extends up to 50 meters from the sanctuary boundary line to the end of Kakinada city. On the other fronts, the entire ESZ extends from 500 meters to 5 km and excludes the Kakinada Deep Water Port limits.
