Mysuru gets NIMHANS-modelled institute and Regional Endocrinology Centre

The long-pending demand for establishing an institute modelled on National Institute of Mental Sciences and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Mysuru has been realised with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday announcing in the State Budget that a NIMHANS-type institution will be set up in Mysuru and Kalaburagi.
NIMHANS is an institute of national importance, operating autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The institute is well-known in the field of mental health and neurosciences.
In the Budget, the Chief Minister said each institute – in Mysuru and Kalaburagi - will be developed at a cost of ₹100 crore. The NIMHANS institute in Mysuru will be established at Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI), which is part of the Department of Medical Education (DME).
MMCRI Dean and Director K.R. Dakshayani told The Hindu that the institution modelled on NIMHANS, announced in the Budget, would help patients from Mysuru and nearby districts, as critical cases were referred to the NIMHANS in Bengaluru. Such cases can now be treated in Mysuru once the institute becomes operational here.
Critical and complicated cases on the brain, spinal cord, and neuro were referred to the NIMHANS regularly. The proposal for having such a facility in Mysuru had been under discussion. It has been realised now, she said.
“Like how Sri Jayadeva Institute has benefitted the patients here, NIMHANS facility will also do the same considering its importance,” she said.
Another key Budget announcement is the establishment of the Regional Endocrinology Centre in Mysuru and Kalaburagi, which will be set up at a cost of ₹100 crore. The centre in Mysuru will be established in MMCRI and be part of the DME. Karnataka Institute of Endocrinology and Research, which serves as the main centre in Bengaluru, and these centres can function as its branches, the doctors said here.
