The city known to house a slew of museums showcasing the rich heritage of Mysuru, got a new art gallery dedicated to displaying Indian traditional and contemporary art.
It is housed at the Wellington House on Irwin Road, and the work has been completed at a cost of ₹ 1 crore by the State Department of Archaeology Museums and Heritage.
The ground floor of the building housed the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sanghrahalaya and the first floor has been renovated and converted into a museum and an art gallery with 101 exhibits under eight categories.
The new museum was inaugurated by Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil, who is also Minister for Tourism, here on Friday.
The exhibits have been categorised under Indian Miniature Paintings, Mysuru Ganjifa Art, Mysuru Traditional Paintings and Tanjore Paintings Legacy of the Mysore Royal Family, Self-Portraits of the Palace Artists, a gallery dedicated to K.K. Hebbar, and Contemporary Indian Art.
The exhibition and the art gallery has been curated by experts from DWIJA Conservation Society of Art and Cultural Heritage, Bengaluru.
The gallery showcasing Mysuru traditional paintings has a series of artworks — about 40 in all — that depict important episodes of Ramayana.
