Multiple organs of accident victim from Tiruppur district harvested at CMCH

Coimbatore Medical College Hospital surgeons harvest organs from brain-dead woman for donation, following TRANSTAN guidelines.
Transplant surgeons of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Saturday harvested multiple organs of a woman from Tiruppur district, who was declared brain-dead after succumbing to injuries suffered in a road accident.
The donor has been identified as N. Thangamani, 43, who is from Dharapuram in Tiruppur district. A construction worker by occupation, Thangamani met with an accident when she travelled to a temple near Anamalai in Coimbatore district on two-wheeler recently. She was admitted to CMCH with a severe head injury.
The woman, however, did not respond to treatment and a medical team declared her brain-dead. A release from CMCH said that Thangamani’s family members came forward to donate her organs.
The transplant surgeons harvested liver, kidneys and eyes of the deceased woman as per the guidelines of the Transplant Authority, Government of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN),y.
The release said that TRANSTAN allotted the eyes and one kidney to CMCH, the liver to a private hospital in Salem and the other kidney to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College, Salem.
CMCH Dean A. Nirmala, doctors, staff and students paid respects to the deceased woman at the hospital, before the body was taken to her residence at Dharapuram for last rites.
