Madras Medical College receives Excellence Award for outstanding multidisciplinary research unit performance from Department of Health Research.
:
The Department of Health Research (DHR), Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, presented an Excellence Award to Madras Medical College (MMC) in recognition of the performance of its multidisciplinary research unit (MRU).
E. Theranirajan, dean of MMC and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, and A. Chitra, nodal officer of the MRU, received the award during the Medical Colleges Research Connect 2025 organised by the DHR in New Delhi on March 20 and 21.
“There are 118 MRUs in the country. These units are funded by the DHR. The research projects initiated and their progress is evaluated every year. Our work is evaluated based on several criteria such as the number of projects initiated and those completed, funds received and utilised, the number of publications, number of works published in indexed journals, patents, and research projects that are adopted at the policy level by the government. We performed well on all these criteria,” Dr. Chitra said.
MMC’s unit has so far initiated 98 projects and completed 44. It has also produced 36 publications.
“DHR’s emphasis is on translational research. It focuses on studies that were published and later adopted as policies by the government,” she said.
One such accomplishment was MMC’s Zero Delay COVID-19 Ward. This model went on to be implemented in many hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes of the ward were published.
