Mini-labs to be set up for food safety testing in Hyderabad

Telangana government to establish specialized food testing labs in GHMC zones for enhanced food safety standards.

In a step towards strengthening food safety in Hyderabad and its surrounding districts, the Telangana government has announced plans to establish specialised testing infrastructure, including mini-labs in each zone of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). These new facilities will enhance food sample testing capacity and quality control, with GHMC assisting in identifying suitable locations, according to an official release.

The initiative comes as part of a broader effort to reform food safety standards across the state, particularly in GHMC, Rangareddy, and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts, which together account for over 60% of Telangana’s food businesses, the release said.

To ensure compliance, the government has pledged to make FSSAI registration or licensing mandatory for all food businesses by cross-checking trade licence data and hawker survey records. Additionally, the Food Safety Department will see an expansion in human resources, with the creation of new posts and senior officers in GHMC overseeing the field staff for better enforcement, the release said.
