The “Gossip Girl” reboot (July 8 on HBO Max), is set in the same world as the original series but follows a new cast of characters. Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) and Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) might have moved on from their prep-school days, but nine years after the original “Gossip Girl” blog went dark, a new generation of New York teens must deal with the ramifications of social surveillance that spills their secrets and follows their wild antics. “To me, it was ‘Who was the best actor for the role?’ ” creator Joshua Safran said, adding that his casting director searched widely for a mixture of fresh-faced unknowns and rising stars who might have niche fan bases. For instance, Thomas Doherty isn’t a household name, but he has 4.3 million Instagram followers. “He’s famous in the Disney world,” Safran said.
