MCC implements measures to reclaim Mysuru's cleanest city status, including fines for littering and beautification efforts for Swachh Survekshan.
In a bid to reclaim Mysuru’s top position among the cleanest cities in India, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has kickstarted its ground plan with a slew of measures, including levying heavy fines on those responsible for littering and dumping garbage.
The MCC will also provide bins at vantage points and will focus on beautifying the city by removing black spots, as well as painting and cleaning areas prone to garbage accumulation. These efforts will have a positive bearing on the outcome of Swachh Survekshan 2024.
Swachh Survekshan (SS) is the annual ranking of the cities under various parameters and Mysuru, which was consistently figuring among the top five cities in India, slid to the 27th position in the SS-2023 ranking.
The MCC Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif told The Hindu that hefty fines will be levied on individuals who litter the city, serving as a deterrent to others.
Noting that the number of pourakarmikas in the city has declined while the workload has increased, the Commissioner said absenteeism will not be tolerated, and the authorities will crack down on it.
To engage the public, the MCC will reach out to NGOs, educational institutions, government organisations, etc., and will conduct meetings to inform them about their roles in keeping Mysuru clean, said the Commissioner.
The legacy waste management was already in place this year and the C&D waste plant was also close to being approved, both of which are expected to provide additional marks to Mysuru, said Mr. Asif.
