Mayor Manoj Kumar on Monday instructed officials of GAIL Gas Ltd. (GGL) to immediately restore roads dug up by the company for laying cooking gas pipelines in the city. At a meeting called by the Mayor, councillors complained about roads left unattended after digging.
Senior councillor Naveen R. D’Souza said that pedestrians and vehicle users are finding it difficult to use the roads. The project has fallen short of its targets even after five years, he said.
Mr. D’Souza demanded that criminal cases be filed against GGL officials and penalties imposed on them for not restoring roads. He questioned why the project was extended to Surathkal area without restoring roads in the heart of Mangaluru.
GAIL Gas officials said that current work is being carried out in wards 1 to 10 in Surathkal.
Leader of the Opposition in the Council Anil Kumar, urged the authorities to stop the project if restoration was not done properly.
Councillor Sangeetha R. Nayak suggested that MCC engineers visit the affected areas to inspect the restoration work.
Councillors alleged that damages to drinking water pipelines have become common wherever GAIL takes up work on laying the gas pipeline.
