An air of festivity pervaded Kuyilapalayam near Auroville, as a large number of tourists and locals flocked to the village square on Thursday to catch a glimpse of the annual ManjuVirattu.
Tourists from countries in Europe turned up in large numbers and gathered in front of the local Pidariamman temple to watch the event.
Manju Virattu, hosted by the village for the last six decades, served as a grand finale for the three-day Pongal festivities. The event commenced around 11 a.m. when the bulls were let loose and goaded to run through the village streets. People, including a large number of foreigners, converged on either sides of the route and cheered the bulls.
The event turned out to be a huge draw and foreign tourists present at the venue got a taste of the traditions of rural Tamil Nadu.
