Man escapes from Hyderabad prison using forged bail papers, sparking manhunt by police; internal inquiry launched.
A man booked and remanded for cheating managed to escape from Central Prison Chanchalguda, Hyderabad after submitting forged bail documents. The Dabeerpura police have launched a manhunt to track down Mir Shujath Ali, who remains at large.
Shujath Ali was initially arrested by the Narsingi police on November 2 in a cheating case and remanded to judicial custody. On November 26, he managed to secure his release by presenting forged bail papers.
The escape came to light when the Narsingi police sought a Prisoner Transit (PT) warrant in connection with another case. After the court accepted the PT warrant, a police team visited the jail to take Shujath Ali into custody, only to discover that he had already been ‘released on bail’.
Further inquiries revealed that the court had not granted bail to Shujath Ali. Jail authorities then verified the documents he had submitted and found them to be forged.
It was discovered that Shujath Ali had tampered with old bail papers with the help of an undertrial prisoner, Ramu, and submitted them to secure his release.
Prison officials have launched an internal inquiry to identify lapses that allowed the forged documents to bypass scrutiny.
On the evening of November 29, the Chanchalguda jail authorities lodged a formal complaint with the Dabeerpura police. “We have registered a case and formed special teams to search for the fugitive. Ali remains untraceable as of now,” said an officer from Dabeerpura police.
