Jacobite-Orthodox conflict at Malankara Church festival leads to police intervention in Kerala, sparking tensions and arrests.
The stand-off between the Jacobite and Orthodox factions of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church spilled onto the streets on Friday (December 20, 2024) night with the police booking a person from Mulanthuruthy, Ernakulam, Kerala, who was reportedly part of a group that confronted the police.
The police was trying to stop possible violence at the Mulanthuruthy Marthoman Church during a procession taken out as part of the church festival on Friday.
The two factions complained of violation of agreement regarding the conduct of the festival procession.
The police have reportedly identified about a dozen people who confronted the police team at the Church venue.
The historic church has been at the centre of contentious claims in the ongoing Church dispute.
