Maharashtra assembly recommends Bharat Ratna for Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule, enhancing their legacy and public sentiment.
The Maharashtra legislative assembly on Monday (March 24, 2025) passed a unanimous resolution recommending that the Centre confer Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award, posthumously for social reformers Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule.
Minister Jaykumar Raval moved the resolution, while NCP MLA Chhagan Bhujbal and Congress's Vijay Wadetiwar spoke in support of it.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said people have recognised the Mahatma title bestowed on Phule, and Bharat Ratna is the recognition of the state.
"Mahatma title was above everything in the country and was enjoyed by only two people — Mahatma Phule and Mahatma Gandhi," he said.
Expressing happiness at the assembly passing the resolution, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said bestowing the country's highest civilian award to the iconic social reformers will be honouring public sentiment.
It will enhance the prestige of the award, he said in a statement.
The resolution enhances the reputation of progressive and reformist Maharashtra, Mr. Pawar said while extending gratitude to legislators for passing it unanimously.

A single judge of the Madras High Court on Wednesday (March 26, 2025) went hammer and tongs against a Division Bench for letting loose “judicial anarchy” by overlooking judgments passed by several coordinate benches in the last 100 years on the issue of granting patta for lands classified as Grama Natham (village site of dwellings).
