Justices M.S. Ramesh and N. Senthilkumar of the Madras High Court on Thursday (March 6, 2025) lauded the Tamil Nadu Prisons and Correctional Services department for maintaining the Central Prison at Puzhal near Chennai very well and providing good-quality food to the inmates.
The judges, presiding over a Division Bench holding the criminal cases portfolio, told State Public Prosecutor Hasan Mohamed Jinnah that they paid a surprise visit to the Puzhal prison on Wednesday (March 5, 2025) and found that the entire prison complex was maintained hygienically.
Justice Ramesh said he and his brother judge tasted the food prepared for the inmates and found that it was sumptuous and of good quality. The judges told the SPP that they interacted with some of the inmates, who too were satisfied with the food and maintenance.
On his part, Mr. Jinnah told the court that the State government intended to enhance the facilities in prisons across the State to international standards. He said the inmates of the Coimbatore open prison had been doing farming, and that prisoners were also running a fuel station.
When the judges said they intended to take up a suo motu case, after obtaining the consent of Chief Justice K.R. Shriram, in order to give their suggestions for additional facilities at the prisons, the SPP said the Prisons department would be happy to implement the suggestions to be given by the court.
