UDF protest against government fund cuts in Ernakulam concludes with allegations of failure in city development by Left rule.
The day-and-night protest organised by the United Democratic Front (UDF) outside local self-government institutions in Ernakulam as part of the State-wide programme against the government’s decision to slash funds to local bodies concluded here on Saturday (April 5).
Hibi Eden, MP, inaugurated the valedictory session held near High Court Junction. He alleged that the Left rule in the Kochi Corporation had failed to ensure development of the city.
The ruling council has only spent money allocated under the Smart City project launched by the UDF government earlier. However, the Left government had been trying to curtail the allocation under the project, he alleged.
Mr. Eden blamed the Left-led council in the Corporation for not taking concrete steps to check the mosquito and stray dog menace. He alleged that the ruling council had failed to address issues raised by the public. Similar protests were held in front of the grama panchayat and municipal offices in Ernakulam.

Senior CPI(M) leader A.K. Balan, who was removed from the party central committee at the 24th Party Congress in Madurai late last week in accordance with the age cap of 75 years for party positions, made a poignantly reflective Facebook post on Saturday, recalling his early years in the party and also stating, figuratively, that he is on the verge of yet another eviction – from the AKG Flat this time.
