In 2020, when the AIADMK was in power, a sum of ₹168 crore was sanctioned for the construction of an integrated bus terminus, and a land parcel was identified next to the Vellalore dumping yard. And when the DMK came to power in 2021, the bus terminus project was halted citing so many reasons and by the time 40 per cent construction works were over.
The land was suggested for setting up a wholesale vegetable and fruit market, heavy vehicle parking and parcel office. Vegetable and fruit merchants declined the offer.
Now, sources in the civic body say that the site would be utilised for shifting the Ukkadam truck terminal and parcel booking office. Also, the problem of parking of trucks along the L&T Bypass road could be put an end to.
An announcement in this connection is likely soon.
